Ocean Beach...authentic California beach town.O
cean Beach is just south of the Mission Bay channel entrance. This is a wide beach approximately one mile long and water is divided into surfing and swimming/boogie board zones. A volleyball area can be found near the north end of the beach.
The Ocean Beach Municipal Pier, at the south end of the beach is available for walking and fishing. There is a restaurant and bait shop on the pier. Fishing from the pier does not require a fishing license, but catch regulations are enforced. With several great surf breaks right out front of the hotel, a dedicated swimming section, tide pools just south of the pier, and 24/7 lifeguards, Ocean Beach is the perfect family-friendly beach in San Diego. All of this just steps from your room.
The Ocean Beach Hotel is near the south end of the beach, adjacent to numerous restaurants, surf shops, and other commercial establishments, mostly along Newport Avenue and Abbott Street. The north end of the beach is primarily bordered by residential properties.
One unique feature of Ocean Beach is Dog Beach, a sandy area at the northernmost end. This is an area where dogs are permitted without a leash at all hours of the day. Dog owners are responsible for control and clean-up of their dogs. Standard dog laws apply on other portions of Ocean Beach and are strictly enforced.
San Diego Lifeguards protect the beach year round and the main lifeguard station is across the street from the Ocean Beach Hotel. Swimmers should be cautioned about rip currents and check at the Lifeguard station for safe areas to swim. The Lifeguard station has restrooms and showers. In general, lifeguards are on duty from 9am to dusk, with longer hours during the summer season.
